Arrive into Auckland and check into your hostel. Spend the afternoon exploring the city, head up to the top of the Sky Tower for some epic city views. Enjoy the cheap drinks deals at the bar in the evening and get to know some of other travellers. Accommodation: Base Auckland
Meet up with the Stray Bus team and your travel group, then depart Auckland in the morning, heading east to the Coromandel peninsular where you will be staying at Stray’s unique beachside accommodation in Hahei for 2 nights, before heading to Hot Water Beach to soak in the geo-thermal pools. Free Day in Hahei, with great activity options, such as the Hole In The Rock sailing tour, or head out in kayaks to explore the coastline in an incredible way. Other options include, bicycle hire, scuba diving or cooking classes. Accommodation: Stray Accommodation Hahei
Leave Hahei and hit the road back to the west coast to check into NZ’s surf capital, Raglan. Learn to surf, catch some waves, or just explore this welcoming surf town in your own way. Hike around Mt Karioi, check out the local waterfall and go glow worm spotting after dark. Accommodation: Eco-Lodge Accommodation
From Raglan you will be making your way to Rotorua, the North Island’s adventure capital. Before you hit Roto, your group will make a stop at Waitomo, where you will have the options to take on the famous Black Water Rafting through the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. This is not to be missed!
From the caves you will then make another stop at the popular Hobbiton Movie Set, where you can explore the Hobbit houses and gardens from the epic Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. If this doesn’t interest you, don’t worry, you can skip it and continue on to Rotorua and check into your city centre hostel.
The evening will give you an opportunity to check into the Tamaki Village, to enjoy the best Maori Cultural Experience in the country, and possibly the best meal you will eat during your travels! Accommodation: City Centre Hostel
The Stray bus departs at midday, which leaves the morning open for you to take on some of Rotorua’s epic activities. Choose from White Water Rafting, Luging, the stunning Wai-O-Tapu, Zorbing, and more!
From Rotorua, your group will head south to one of Stray’s unique experiences in Lake Aniwhenua, where you will have a truly unique Maori experience in a real Maori community. Learn about the history and culture of the local region, take a guided walk to ancient Maori rock carvings, cook Maori food and participate in the local school community programme (Exclusive to Stray!). Say goodbye to your new friends in Lake Aniwhenua and head to another of Stray’s unique stays in Whakahoro (try pronouncing that one correctly!). Before your reach Whakahoro, you will be stopping in Taupo, home to the most affordable Skydive in NZ, the largest lake in NZ, and the mighty Huka Falls. There are opportunities to bungy or skydive to get your adrenaline pumping, before continuing on to your next destination.
Whakahoro is one of the most remote locations in the North Island and home to Blue Duck Station, and 7,200 acre farm. Relax in the stunning surroundings, grab a beer and chat around the fire. Accommodation: Blue Duck Station
Today is a free day at Blue Duck Station, Whakahoro. Today’s the day when you can become a real Kiwi Cowboy/Cowgirl. Travel by 4WD across the epic high-country farm, through native bush and over dramatic peaks, alternatively hit the hills on horseback, or follow the rivers by kayak for the ultimate experience. Visit the Bridge To Nowhere and the Kaiwhakauka waterfall or help the local farmer hunt tonight’s dinner! Alternatively you can just chill out on the farm and go on hikes around the area for free. Depart Whakahoro early, feeling like a proper Kiwi rancher, and head to Tongariro National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to one of the top day walks in the world – The 19km Tongariro Crossing. Hike along epic ridges with dramatic mountain scenery, across volcanic plateaus and past stunning turquoise lakes. The walk can be completed un-guided in the summer but you need to take a guide during the winter! Accommodation: Hostel in National Park Village
From Tangariro National Park you will make tracks south towards New Zealand’s quaint capital – Wellington. Check out the lively arts scene, the exceptional coffee, great craft beer and learn more about the history of this incredible country at the local museums, such as the Te Papa National Museum. If you’re feeling energetic you could walk up Mt Victoria or take the tram into the Botanical Gardens for fantastic views of the ‘coolest little capital city in the world’. Depart Wellington on the inter-island ferry over to Picton on the South Island. From Picton you will be heading across the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park, where you will be staying for 2 nights in the coastal community of Marahau. On the way, enjoy some wine tasting in the World famous Marlborough wine region. Not content with that, you can arrive into the National Park and head straight off to jump out of a plane at 19,000ft! Free day in Abel Tasman to explore this stunning location. Hike the coastal walking tracks, kayak to the remote beaches along the National Park coastline, try your had at Stand Up Paddle Boarding, or just relax on the deck of a catamaran as you cruise along the coast. Keep your eye out for the NZ Fur Seals that call this area home year round. Accommodation: Unique Stray Accommodation in Abel Tasman National Park
From Abel Tasman your Stray group will head south along the wild west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Raed one of the top ten drives in the world the coastal road will take you through Buller Gorge down to Cape Foulwind and then onto the historic town of Westport, another of NZ’s surfing hubs. Accommodation: Villa in the Town Centre
An early start today, heading further down this wild west coast to Franz Josef, home to New Zealand’s largest glacier. Before you reach the glacier you will stop at some iconic locations, such as Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and the town of Greymouth. Your group will stay 2 nights at Franz giving you a full day to do one of the best activities (you will EVER do) on your free day! Accommodation: Monsoons Hostel, Franz Josef
Spend the day exploring the mighty Franz Josef Glacier in real style. The Franz Josef Heli Hike is quite simply one of the best activities available to travellers anywhere in the world. Start your trip with a short helicopter ride over the mountain range and up to the glacier. Hop out and begin a 2 – 3 hour hike across the very changing glacial ice, through ice caves and crevasses, before hopping back into your helicopter for your ride back down to Franz Josef. The trip is not finished, with entry into the local Hot Pools included – a great way to sooth those aching muscles!
Not enough excitement for you!? Don’t worry, you can do NZ’s highest Skydive in Franz Josef with the option to jump from 21,000ft over the impressive glacier! Accommodation: Monsoons Hostel, Franz Josef
After all the excitement from your Heli Hike, you group will now be heading through the mountains towards Wanaka, with stops along the way, including the iconic Lake Matheson (mirror-lake) and views of the stunning Fox Glacier. Heading through the Haast Pass, you group will arrive into Wanaka in the late afternoon, in time for some free time to explore this picturesque lake-side mountain town. Before your leave Wanaka you will be able to visit the hilarious Puzzling World, where life gest literally turned upside down. From Wanaka you will be making your way to (quite possibly) the adventure capital of the World – Queenstown. When you arrive you will stop at the outskirts, where you will have the option to put your fears to the test and take on the Kawarau Bridge Bungy, the first commercial bungy jump in the world. Epic nights out, loads of great food haunts and too many activities, Queenstown is the place to be! Accommodation: Town Centre Hostel
Free Day in Queenstown, where you can do one or two or three of the following…
- Nevis Bungy Jump – NZ’s biggest bungy at 138m.
- Nevis Swing – NZ’s biggest swing.
- Ledge Bungy Jump – Jump from a ledge on Ben Lomond Mountain, with dazzling views over Queenstown. Front-flip, back-flip, do whatever you want!
- Kawarau Bridge Bungy – The first commercial bungy jump in NZ is stunning!
- Canyon Swing – The original swing; get pushed off on a chair, take the slide option, or just jump…
- Canyon Fox – Zip line from side to side in the amazing canyon setting.
- Jet Boating – Hit the river at up to 90km an hour.
- Learn to Ski/Snowboard – Head out to the world renowned Cardrona Snow Fields and show off your skills.
- FunYaks – Combine Jet Boating with Kayaking round the stunning Mt Aspiring National Park.

Today is the day when you will visit one of the most beautiful spots on the planet – Milford Sound. Just google it, it’s stunning. Leaving Queenstown early in the morning your will take the 4-5 hour drive to the remote Milford Sound. The drive is long but utterly incredible! At Milford you will head out on a 2 hour boat cruise through the fjords and through the mountains out to the Tasman Sea, before returning back through the dazzling fjordlands. Get your camera at the ready this ride is a cracker. After some stops at some of Milford’s iconic spots you will make your way back to Queensotwn in time for some down time and then another magical night in this lively town. Say goodbye to Queenstown… your new love! And head off to New Zealand’s biggest mountain – Mt Cook. Taking the Lindi Pass through Mackenzie Country, stopping at Lake Pukaki on the way to your Alpine Lodge accommodation at the base of Mt Cook. Enjoy 4WD trails and check out the Edmond Hillary (first guy to climb Everest!) Alpine Centre. Accommodation: Alpine Lodge
After embracing the beauty of Mt Cook, your final day will take you toward the end of your trip in Christchurch. Along the way you will stop at the turquoise Lake Tekapo for a dip in the hot springs, a spot of ice-skating, tubing or just a stroll round this striking lake. Your group will then arrive into Christchurch in the early afternoon, giving you time to explore the city and check out the re-building activities after the devastating earthquake of 2011.
